The Wood Burn Corner Artist Residency offers time and space for an artist to get away from their usual distractions so they can create the art that they have always wanted to make. It’s a place to nurture your creative process and to offer you a space to explore your craft, be inspired by the beauty of the Pacific Northwest and a new environment, try new tools and materials, and to create with intention.

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

Applications are now closed. Join the free Burn Club to be notified first when applications open up again!

Eligibility: All pyrography artists are eligible to apply.

Selection Process: Artists are selected to attend the residency by the Wood Burn Corner Team. The committee reviews all applications submitted to the program. Selection is based on the merit of the artist's portfolio and the residency proposal. Wood Burn Corner does not allow discrimination of any kind based on race, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin, disability, marital status, or sexual orientation and we expect the same level of acceptance from anyone who wishes to apply.

Once selected, the artist will work with Rachel to determine the best dates/duration for the Artist Residency. At that time, we will also collect more information about food preferences, any special needs, any additional art materials needed, and to sign liability waivers. We want this to be a wonderful experience for everyone involved.

Duration of Residency: 4-7 days (dependent on artist's needs/timing/flights) Dates TBD - If all goes well with the first Artist in Residence, then we will most likely hold several of these per year.

Fees + Responsibilities: The residency is free to apply for and free to attend. Wood Burn Corner will cover all materials and supplies, accommodation expenses (private art studio/bedroom + private bathroom), and food as well as transportation to any excursions with Rachel outside of the premises during your stay.

Artist is responsible for their own flight/drive to Tualatin, Oregon. The nearest airport is Portland International Airport (PDX).

Safety requirements: Artist will be responsible for presenting a negative covid test prior to travel, and if traveling by plane, will be required to wear an N95 mask while traveling. Rachel and her family are extremely careful when it comes to health and safety, and would appreciate the artist taking precautions leading up to entering their home.

Accommodations: The residency provides a private art studio/bedroom with en-suite bathroom. The bed is a brand new full sized Joybird Sleeper Sofa with a 5" memory foam mattress. There is a communal kitchen, dining and several lounge areas. Artist is encouraged to explore the 1.3 acre property which backs up to a forest. Explore the waterfalls on property, enjoy the maple trees surrounding the home, and gather inspiration from the views on the rooftop deck. We hope your stay here will be just as relaxing as it is inspiring.

Please note: The bedroom/studio is not handicap accessible(2nd floor). You will be sharing the house with Rachel, her family(Mr.WBC + 3 kids), and two sweet dogs(Jack + Joe).

Studio Space: The residency provides a studio space (WBC headquarters). This incudes the use of a variety of pyrography machines, pens, nibs, woods, and other mediums you can use (watercolor, acrylic, gouache, pens, markers, gold leaf, gel pens, torch, engravers, etc). A printer is also available for use.

If there are any specific materials you may need, please include that in your application, so we can make sure to provide those materials for you.

You are free to bring your own pyrography tools and/or other supplies you need for your project. Please bring your own laptop or any electronic devices if they are part of your artistic journey!

Residency Terms + Expectations: Artists must provide transportation to and from the location in Tualatin, Oregon. The closest airport is Portland (PDX).  Rachel may be able to pick you up from the airport and drop you off, but that will be dependent on flight times and her availability.

Artists are expected to share their experiences and process through their social media daily while at the Residency. We want you to bring the audience along for the ride. You and your work-in-progress and finished artwork will also be appearing on Wood Burn Corner's social media accounts and website throughout your Residency.

The expectation is that the artist has finished pieces ready for an art gallery showing by the end of the Residency.

Final Exhibition: Wood Burn Corner will assist you in putting together an online art gallery at the end of your residency with your finished piece(s) to be displayed on all WBC platforms.

The artist owns 100% of the artwork created and can sell/display them however they choose beyond the Artist Residency Gallery. WBC will not be taking any portion of any profits from the sale of any works created during the Residency.  Artist will be responsible for getting their pieces home/shipped to their final destination.
